Recycled Polyester Yarn: Everything You Should Know

Table of Contents

What if you can manufacture yarn from plastic bottles? Approximately 480 billion plastic water bottles are manufactured annually. The majority of these are disposed of in landfills across the world. As a result, it affects our ecological nature. So, recycling these bottles will save nature.

Thankfully, recycling such plastic trash is now possible thanks to contemporary technology. Recycled Polyester Yarn is one of the most outcomes of this. Yes! Recycled polyester yarn may be produced by melting down used plastics and spinning them again into new polyester fiber.

This yarn uses eco-friendly recycling techniques to create eco-friendly yarns while reducing its environmental impact without sacrificing quality. This article is going to explore each and every fact about this yarn.

What is Recycled Polyester Yarn

Recycled polyester yarn, also known as rPet yarn, is a type of polyester yarn manufactured by recycling plastic bottles. Generally, PET is used to manufacture Recycled Polyester. PET is the identical material that is employed to make transparent plastic bottles; by recycling these bottles, you can keep them out of the trash.

Recycled polyester yarn is a type of fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. The manufacturing process involves breaking down the plastic bottles into small pellets, which are then melted and spun into yarn. recycled polyester yarn is often used in clothing and upholstery fabrics, as it is durable and easy to care for. It is also becoming increasingly popular in home furnishings, as it is an environmentally friendly option. We are proud to partner with a recycled polyester yarn manufacturer who shares our commitment to sustainability. Together, we are working to create a more sustainable future for our planet.

The textile sector has long used recycled polyester yarn. However, since the early 1990s, this technology, as well as the procedure, has been in use widely. In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the market for recycled polyester. Since polyester is made from petrochemical materials, it cannot be considered a sustainable textile alternative.

Although recycling plastic seems like an obviously good idea, the environmental-friendly fashion world is far from unanimous in its support for rPET yarn. However, the polyester recycled yarn has a lot of benefits, including less energy being used during production. This yarn is commonly used to create textiles for sports and fashionable garments in the textile industries.

Recycled polyester yarn manufacturing process

Recycled polyester yarn can be produced in two different ways: mechanical process and chemical process. However, the mechanical process is much more eco-friendly than the chemical process. So, let’s take a look at how to produce rPET yarn through the mechanical process in our polyester yarn factory.

Step-01: Collecting and Cleaning

PET bottles or containers are gathered at recycling facilities, packaged, and delivered to certain PET recycling facilities. The containers or bottles’ caps, as well as labels, are taken off and cleansed. They are also washed and steam-clean to get rid of any non-PET materials.

Step-02: Shredding

The second step is associated with Shredding. An automated bale breaker is used to shred the bottles and containers into flakes. The flakes are properly cleaned and inspected one more time to ensure there are no contaminants. Later, the colored plastics are separated from the transparent plastics.

Step-03: Processing

To be reconstructed into PET chips, it undergoes a depolymerization and depolymerization procedure. These PET chips may be a further procedure to create fresh water bottles, clothes, insulation, and so on.

Step-04: Melting

They are forced through heated pipes to turn the dry chips into a liquid. A dye plate featuring tiny pores filters the liquid across. It then solidified into fibers when it cooled, and the yarn is made by smoothing, stretching, and putting the fibers on reels.

Step-05: Polyester recycled yarn

The yarn is prepared to be used once more and knit or even woven into fabric. It performs functionally and aesthetically like traditional polyester yarn.

Advantages of polyester recycled yarn

Now, you may ask about the advantages of this yarn. Recycled polyester yarn comes with different advantages. Let’s explore the benefits of polyester recycled yarn.

Excellent Durability

Recycled polyester gives almost identical qualities to traditional polyester. It is strong, light, crease-proof, colorfast, quick-drying, stain-resistant, environmentally friendly, and affordable. Because of this, polyester is frequently used in numerous textiles, including those for the home, apparel, sports, as well as outdoor gear.

Reduction of plastics in landfills

The decrease in the number of bottles dumped in landfills is a significant benefit of utilizing recycled polyester. Reusing plastic bottles while manufacturing recycled polyester fibers has substantially positive effects on lowering environmental pollutants. Additionally, less petroleum will be utilized to produce virgin polyester as a result.

Energy Saving

When compared to virgin polyester, recycled polyester yarn results in significant energy efficiency during the fiber production process. Additionally, choosing recycled polyester instead virgin polyester results in a 20% decrease in water usage and a 30% decrease in CO2 emissions.

Is recycled polyester sustainable?

Polyester may be produced using recycled resources, which has less influence on the environment than fresh raw materials. It is, therefore, more environmentally friendly than virgin polyester. There is still an opportunity for development to make the substance more sustainable.

It is virtually hard to recycle items that are constructed from a mixture of materials rather than totally from recycled polyester. Additionally, mechanical recycling results in a weaker polyester. As a result, the fabric is frequently combined with virgin polyester. However, there is a growing demand for recycled polyester; therefore, it is possible that the product will continue to be sustainable in the future.

Applications of Recycled Polyester Yarn

Recycled polyester filament yarn is widely used in the textile as well as clothing industry. Since it is a highly durable yarn, the fabric also has excellent durability. This feature makes this yarn a perfect option for sportswear. It is frequently used in handkerchiefs, silk scarves, cheongsam, shirts, skirts, suspenders, as well as children’s apparel.

Polyester recycled yarn is also used to manufacture different home textiles. Home textiles like sheets, sleeping bags, comforters, soft furnishings, and upholstery are made of this. Textile manufacturers also produce fashion umbrellas, luggage, gift bags, and also other bags using this yarn. The majority of the time, it is employed to manufacture textiles that need GRS certification.

Is recycled polyester safe to wear?

There is no distinction between virgin polyester as well as recycled polyester in terms of their safety. Both textiles are secure for usage and wear. Cotton pillowcases and linens are not recommended if you have asthma. Although polyester isn’t very flammable, you must avoid wearing it near open flames.

Polyester is not any safer than comparable fabrics. The primary variations are found in specific characteristics of the fabric, such as its stretchiness and ease of recycling. Polyester is particularly intriguing in this regard since other fabrics are either impossible to recycle or only challenging to do so.

  1. Very nice concept . Your is mechanical process . What is a difference in between mechanical and chemical process .

    1. Thank you, sir/madam.

The main difference between mechanical and chemical recycling processes for producing recycled polyester (rPET) yarn lies in the way the waste plastic is treated.

In mechanical recycling, post-consumer plastic waste is first cleaned, shredded, and melted down to form pellets, which are then spun into yarn. The process involves minimal chemical intervention and simply relies on physical processes to transform the waste material into a new product. This means that mechanical recycling has relatively low energy requirements and generates less pollution than chemical recycling.

On the other hand, chemical recycling uses more complex processes to break down the plastic waste chemically into its basic building blocks, such as monomers or oligomers, which can then be used to create new polymers. This technology may involve various technologies like pyrolysis, gasification, or depolymerization. Chemical recycling requires extensive use of chemicals and energy to achieve the desired results and generate significant waste products.

While mechanical recycling is a simpler and less energy-intensive process, it may not produce materials with the same level of purity as chemical recycling, but it usually produces high-quality fibers with enough properties to be used again. In contrast, chemical recycling can produce higher quality rPET but requires more energy and resources to achieve those results.
